Discomfort Index
or
Temperature - Humidity Index
T.H.I.
Since people feel warmer in high-humidity areas, this
formula is used to make an index number that will indicate
how comfortable most people will feel at that temperature
and relative humidity. It is based on Wet Bulb and Dry
Bulb findings from a psychrometer. The formula is:
THI = 0.4 (dbt + wbt) + 15
where dbt = dry bulb temp.
wbt = wet bulb temp.
For example, if the dry bulb temperature is 82, and the wet
bulb temperature is 75, the THI would be 78.
INDEX NUMBER:
Below 70 - Most people will feel comfortable.
75 - About half the people will feel uncomfortable.
Above 80 - Nearly everyone will feel uncomfortable.
The Temperature Humidity Index was created by the Society
of Air Conditioning Engineers. The first version was
created in 1923 and has been revised several times. This
current version was created in 1958.
